Why Is My Business Not Showing Up on Google? A Step-by-Step Diagnosis

    Local SEOGoogle Business ProfileTroubleshooting

You search your own service — "electrician in Frederick," "salon near me" — and your business is nowhere. Competitors you know you're better than fill the map pack. Before you panic or hire anyone, run this diagnosis in order. Most invisibility traces to one of six causes.

    1. Your Google Business Profile isn't verified (or doesn't exist)

Search your exact business name. No profile appears, or it says "Own this business?" — that's the whole problem. An unverified profile can't rank in the map pack at all. Claim and verify it first; nothing else matters until this is done.

    2. Your profile exists but is nearly empty

A profile with one category, no services, no photos, and three reviews is technically alive but competitively dead. Google fills the map pack with complete, active profiles. Compare yours side-by-side with the businesses that outrank you — the gap is usually obvious.

    3. Your business information contradicts itself across the web

If your name, address, or phone number differs between your website, your profile, Yelp, Facebook, and old directories — maybe from a move or a rebrand — Google loses confidence in which version is true, and confidence is exactly what rankings are built on. Inconsistent listings are one of the most common silent killers we find in audits.

    4. Your website doesn't say what you do or where

Google connects searches to pages. If your site is five pages of "quality service you can trust" with no page that plainly says you do sump pump replacement in Rockville, there's nothing to rank. Every service you want calls for, in every area you serve, needs a real page that says so.

    5. Google can't actually read your site

Slow load times, text locked inside images, or a site that only renders in a browser can leave crawlers staring at a blank page. Search your site with site:yourdomain.com — if Google shows few or none of your pages, you have a technical problem, not a content problem.

    6. You're competing in a harder radius than you think

The map pack is distance-sensitive. If you're on the edge of town targeting the city center, you're fighting geography plus competition. The counter is strength everywhere else: reviews, complete profiles, and dedicated area pages that prove you serve those neighborhoods.

    Work the list in order

Verification, profile completeness, consistency, content, crawlability, then competitive strength — each layer depends on the ones before it. Most businesses find their answer in the first three, and those fixes are free except for the time. The rest is steady SEO work that compounds month over month.
